Nurse Midwives in HawaiiBaby Notes: Choosing A Provider
It is important to find a prenatal care provider you trust and with whom you
feel comfortable. In Hawaii, you have 2 choices - OBGYN or Certified Nurse Midwife
(CNM).
OBGYN
This is a medical doctor with at least 3 or 4 years of specialized training
in obstetrical care. OBGYNs provide all aspects of gynecological and obstetrical
(pregnancy) care. All insurance plans cover OBGYNs.
CNMs
CNMs are registered nurses with advanced training in obstetrics and gynecology.
CNMs attend births in hospitals and work in collaboration with OBGYNs. CNMs
provide woman-centered, personalized care, and are covered by most insurance
plans in Hawaii. For more info about CNMs, go to www.hawaiimidwives.org.).
Only you can decide which provider is right for you. It is OK to interview providers
before deciding on one. Ask them questions regarding their views on pregnancy,
labor and delivery.
